Stonewall Libertarians Creates New Standard For Endorsement Of Candidates Seeking Office
Tired of receiving evasive answers in response to candidate survey questions, Stonewall Libertarians has adopted a specific statement of rights candidates seeking elective office must substantively adopt and place on their websites if they wish to be considered for endorsement.
That statement is the following: "I believe in full equality for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals regardless of their sexual orientations or perceived gender identity or presentation. I would call for the immediate repeal of federal and state Defense of Marriage Acts. I would do away with the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, thus allowing our gay and lesbian service men and women to serve their country openly and proudly. I oppose the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment and all state constitutional amendments seeking to define marriage as a bond between one man and one woman. I would do away with all special benefits and privileges granted to individuals on the basis of their marital status. I would like all state governments and localities to get out of the business of granting marriage licenses and allow people to enter into contractual relationships to order their lives as they see fit, but so long as the government continues to grant marriage licenses to heterosexual couples, I believe gay couples are entitled to the "equal protection" of the laws and should be allowed to obtain government issued marriage licenses as well. I do not believe the government should require religious institutions to perform marriage ceremonies that go against their church doctrine. I oppose all laws that discriminate against gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered Americans and feel they deserve full equality under the law."
"This new standard requires candidates seeking our endorsement to substantively adopt a specific 'gay right's plank' and to place that plank prominently on their website," said Dr. Tom Stevens, Executive Director of Stonewall Libertarians. "We got tired of candidates submitting vague and evasive answers to our candidate survey questions. This new positive statement tells us exactly where a particular candidate stands on issues of importance to us."
The first candidate to substantively adopt the 'gay right's plank' of Stonewall Libertarians and receive its endorsement was David Schlosser, the Libertarian Party candidate for Congress from Arizona's 1st Congressional District. Upon placing the 'Stonewall Libertarians Statement Of Rights' on his website, David Schlosser wrote, "One of the nation's leading gay rights advocacy groups, Stonewall Libertarians, has proposed the following statement of rights which I endorse." Just prior to receiving the endorsement of Stonewall Libertarians, David Schlosser confirmed by e-mail, "It's my position, substantively."
Candidates willing to adopt the 'gay right's plank' of Stonewall Libertarians and place it on their website in order to be considered for endorsement should contact Dr. Tom Stevens, Executive Director of Stonewall Libertarians, at DrTomStevens@aol.com
