Letter To The Editor Published in the Daily Star Journal Aug 26, 2005

Dear Editor,

I hope that others are as concerned as I am about the proposed sales tax to
support the Hawthorne Place development in Warrensburg. The developer plans a
retail and residential area north and east of Wal-Mart and already has one
tax break in the form of a Neighborhood Improvement District. Now, he’s asking
the Warrensburg City Council to raise the sales tax by a full ½ cent in order
to build roads so people can get to the stores in his subdivision. He wants
the extra tax on sales in those stores; he also wants the extra tax on all
sales in Warrensburg Wal-Mart!

As a Libertarian, I’m opposed to governments handing out corporate
welfare. Subsidies, so-called tax incentives and the like get
businesses to make decisions that are economically unsound. But you
don’t have to be a Libertarian to see through this proposal. Everyone
who shops at Wal-Mart in Warrensburg, whether living in Warrensburg,
Holden, Odessa, Knob Noster or elsewhere, would be forced to pay for
this subdivision. That’s a travesty!

If you ever shop at Warrensburg’s Wal-Mart, you need to let two groups
know your opinion. One group is the Wal-Mart management; if they oppose
the idea it will be much harder to push through. If you shop at
Warrensburg, look for a manager and remind him that there are other
Wal-Marts with lower tax rates. The other is the Warrensburg City
Council, who can stop the tax dead. Attend the city hall meeting this Monday
night, Aug 29th, located in City Hall, 102 S. Holden, Warrensburg MO, or
email the city from its website www.warrensburg.com Tell them that
Warrensburg’s sales tax is high enough already. Tell them that taxes should
only be used for legitimate government purposes, not to bail out developers.
